What are carpenter ants?

The carpenter ant (Lasius fuliginosus), also known as the shiny carpenter ant, is an ant species that prefers to build its nests in damp or already infested wood. Unlike woodworms, carpenter ants do not feed on wood, but dig tunnels and chambers in the wood to house their colony. As a result, they cause structural damage to buildings and furniture in the long term.
