What are wood borers?
The most common wood-destroying pests in Belgium are:
Houtwormen en houtkevers
"Woodworm" is a collective name for the larvae of various types of wood beetles. Some common types:
1. Common furniture beetle (Anobium punctatum)
This is the most well-known woodworm in Belgium. The larvae live in the wood for years and gnaw their way out, leaving round holes of about 2 mm. Particularly affected softwood such as beams and floors are vulnerable.
2. Sapwood beetle (Lyctus brunneus)
This beetle mainly attacks hardwood, such as oak or tropical wood. It is often found in parquet floors, furniture and wooden cabinets. The exit holes are small and oval, and often fine drill dust comes out.
3. Borer beetle or house borer (Hylotrupes bajulus)
The house longhorn beetle is one of the most damaging wood destroyers. These larvae can live in beams for up to 10 years and cause enormous structural damage. The beetle itself is black-brown with grey spots and can be up to 2.5 cm in size.
4. Klopkever (Xestobium rufovillosum)
Also known as the death-beater. They make a ticking sound in the wood, especially at night. The larvae develop in old oak wood and cause considerable damage to antique furniture or old buildings.
Wood ants (Lasius fuliginosus)
The carpenter ant is a black ant species known for its ability to build nests in damp or rotting wood. Unlike woodworms, carpenter ants do not eat the wood, but dig tunnels to house their colony. However, they can cause serious structural damage to wooden beams, roofs and facades. Carpenter ants often indicate a damp problem or already damaged wood.
